Campsite Overview

Midway between Johannesburg and Durban on an idyllic piece of land, encircled by awe-inspiring mountains you will find Amphitheatre Backpackers. The lodge takes its name from “The Amphitheatre,” the most famous geographic feature of the Northern Drakensberg, South Africa. The Amphitheatre is widely regarded as one of the most impressive cliffs on earth. The lodge looks directly onto its facade and on a clear day, after the rains, the Tugela Falls can be seen as it plunges 1km down the ancient rock face.

The grasslands are populated with buck, small mammals and an abundance of birdlife. Unique dwellings are crafted from stone and thatch, with stained glass, mosaics, metal and wooden carvings. Some rooms are located in converted grain silos, using solar energy to heat the water and the entire place is surrounded by beautiful indigenous rockeries.

Here you can camp in style with incredible views, clean toilets and piping hot showers and access all the lodge’s fab facilities. Self-catering kitchens are available with ovens, fridges, freezers, cutlery and crockery. Join us in the restaurant for delicious meals made cooked up from ingredients grown in our organic veggie patch.
