Campsite Overview
Platbos Forest is one of the few surviving indigenous forests in South Africa. A Lowland Afrotemperate forest remnant, it is filled with ancient trees, some of which are over 1000 years old.
The forest, found on the slopes of the Baviaanspoort Hills, is located on the Grootbos Road between the fishing village of Gansbaai and the seaside town of Hermanus in the Western Cape Province. Southern Right whales gather each year in Spring to birth their young in the blue waters of Walker Bay, a few kilometers away from the forest.
Accommodation consists of glamping tents, neat and rustic, wooden cabins, offering a unique eco-friendly and off-grid experience, and a secluded campsite set beneath a majestic white stinkwood tree. All glamping tents and cabins sleep a maximum of 2 people, with some fitted with wood-fired hot tubs and the campsite is booked out exclusively for a maximum of 4 people.
The campsite is unfortunately not suitable for caravans, or for vehicles that exceed 2.5 metres in height. It has a secluded and remote atmosphere and is totally off-grid. It makes use of an old-fashioned Donkey Boiler for hot water. Wood is supplied for this, however campers are responsible for making their own fires. A sink is provided for washing up and food preparation and a fire pit and braai grid is also available on-site. You are welcome to make use of the communal freezer found in the “Freezer Hut” on the Fire Break.
